Soapstone carving of a mermaid (the stone wasn't large enough to include the tail). Her back is lightly waxed to make it smooth and glossy as it emerges from the 'water'.
Could make a nice bookend, since the stone cuts off squarely.

Soapstone is soft and should be kept away from sharp objects. Even a thumbnail can scratch the surface, although a light scratch can be rubbed away with a cloth.
